Divorce & Separation Counselling

For many years, people associated the Relate organisation with marriage guidance & keeping couples together. While the main focus of our work remains adult couple relationships, we can also help people to separate & move on with their new lives.

By reducing the acrimony that often occurs when a relationship ends, this can help reduce the pain than usually accompanies the breakdown of a relationship.

Relate does not offer legal advice but can provide a list of Solicitors who specialise in marital or relationship breakdown.

Clients approaching Relate for Divorce and Separation Counselling have many concerns about their situation. Here are some aspects of the Counselling process which reflect our clients most frequently expressed concerns:

Understanding the relationship and exploring their part in its breakdown

Parenting - building a co-parenting relationship and working for the children's best interests while living apart

Adjusting to life as either a parent living alone with their children or as a parent living apart from their children

Recognising the parts of the relationship they will be leaving behind and the good parts which they can still value

Regaining a sense of their own identity as a separate person

Moving towards a new view of the future - Saying good-bye

Relate recognises that the decision to separate or divorce is not lightly taken. That decision may be made by one person within the relationship or may be an agreement between both partners. In either case powerful feelings, which seem unmanageable, are experienced and often lead to frustrated communication and increased conflict.

Relate Counsellors are trained to work with couples and individuals to explore, understand, and better manage these feelings by helping them to communicate more clearly, reduce conflict & work towards a more amicable parting.

One of the aims of Divorce and Separation Counselling is to help clients adjust to their new situation, explore new relationships & so move forward in their lives.
